Virtual test benches are revolutionizing the validation of ADAS functions
embedded world 2024: Fraunhofer IESE tests driving functions in virtual worlds
Testing driving functions requires thousands of kilometers of test drives after every software change. But what if real test drives on this scale are not possible? This is where virtual test benches come into play. The Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE will be presenting the latest developments in this area at the embedded world Exhibition&Conference 2024 (Hall 4, Stand 422) in Nuremberg from April 9 to 11, 2024, and will show how companies can use virtual test benches to detect errors early on in the development process of their Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

A special highlight of Fraunhofer IESE's presence at the joint booth of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is the driving simulator, which validates new driving functions early and efficiently with the help of the simulation framework “FERAL” developed in-house. This virtual test bench enables the integration of driving function models with digital images of real vehicle components in a simulated system environment. The IESE experts will demonstrate on site how these virtual test benches can be used to detect errors early on in the development process, while at the same time saving on expensive hardware-in-the-loop tests and shortening time-to-market.
“Our virtual test benches offer a revolutionary solution for the validation of ADAS functions in virtual worlds. Thanks to the ability to drive millions of virtual kilometers, they allow for comprehensive and precise validation. The use on virtual ECUs and networks opens up completely new opportunities for the development and testing of driving functions. By injecting errors, we can continuously evaluate and improve various quality aspects such as performance, safety and maintainability of the systems,” explains Dr. Pablo Oliveira Antonino, Department Head Virtual Engineering at Fraunhofer IESE.
Visitors to embedded World 2024 can learn more about the possible applications of Fraunhofer IESE's virtual test benches at the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft's joint booth in hall 4, booth 422.
