Development and design of a European data space for agriculture

In the project AgriDataSpace, which is funded by the European Union, Fraunhofer IESE is working together with project partners from 10 countries to create a European framework for a secure and trustworthy data space in agriculture.

Launched in Paris in October 2022, the AgriDataSpace project will coordinate a preparatory action to pave the way for a European data space in agriculture. The project aims to facilitate data sharing, processing, and analysis in a secured, trusted, transparent and responsible manner in order to create new opportunities for monitoring and optimizing the use of natural resources and to stimulate data-driven innovations.

Challenges

Develop a framework for effective and efficient data sharing that supports the decoupling of data producers and data consumers
Develop a conceptual reference architecture and a technology platform to assure compatibility and interoperability.
Design a governance system for establishing and enforcing data usage agreements, including potential monetization of both data provision and data usage
Establish facilitated access to the digital single market, supported by the appropriate legislative framework
Design a structure for trustworthiness in which data consumers and data providers can share their business interests based on common ethical values
Define business models in which data as a service plays a central role

Contributions of Fraunhofer IESE

Fraunhofer IESE (represented by Prof. Jörg Dörr) is taking on the role of a Technical Manager for the overall project. He is responsible for communication with the Data Spaces Support Center (DSSC), especially regarding the coordination and harmonization of the technical architecture of the data spaces in agriculture.
Fraunhofer IESE is leading the development of the Technology Canvas, a public report on data, models, and interoperability solutions as a technological enabler for the implementation of data spaces in agriculture. For this purpose, existing approaches will be evaluated together with the participating partners and new approaches to the topic of data spaces in agriculture will be designed.

Goals / Results

Provide a complete conceptual reference architecture with building blocks, requirements, guidelines, and milestones for the implementation of a common framework for the European data space for agriculture
Provide a reference technology for navigating heterogeneous repositories while ensuring compatibility with the most important existing initiatives
Assess and share knowledge on the technological requirements that need to be considered for the development of a self-contained and widely adopted European data space for agriculture
