When the “Digital Villages” project (“Digitale Dörfer” in German) started in Rhineland-Palatinate in 2015, no one foresaw that it would evolve into a nationwide lighthouse project. Aiming to examine the challenges of contemporary life in rural areas in terms of digitalization, the project partners, together with the municipalities of Betzdorf-Gebhardshain, Eisenberg, and Göllheim as model communities, developed digital solutions that are now used far beyond Rhineland-Palatinate. Results include the communication app DorfFunk and other smart services that improve the provision of public services in rural areas.
In this video, we describe our ideas and applications.
