INTERSPORT Deutschland e.G. wants to build a Digital Ecosystem for sports experiences (SPEX). At the core of the ecosystem is to be a digital SPEX platform for the brokering of sports experiences between providers of these experiences and their users. In the joint collaboration with Fraunhofer IESE, the concept of the envisioned SPEX ecosystem and its digital platform were developed. Fraunhofer IESE’s “Digital Ecosystem Reference Model” was used in the project – a method that uses a systematic approach to make central ecosystem decisions based on economic, technical, and legal aspects. By structuring the Digital Ecosystem, the project team gradually realized the respective concept refinements of the SPEX platform. The goal of the overall project was to elaborate a vision for Intersport’s sports ecosystem and to create the roadmap to achieve this vision.
Fraunhofer IESE contributed especially its expertise in the systematic conception and design of Digital Ecosystems to Intersport’s SPEX project. Together with the IESE experts, Intersport conducted a “Tangible Ecosystem Design” (TED) workshop. The method – which was developed at Fraunhofer IESE – promotes collaboration in the definition, design, and analysis of a Digital Ecosystem with the help of Playmobil® toys to make the concept as tangible as possible for the participants. Building on the workshop results, it was possible to concretize Intersport’s ecosystem vision; among other things, the ecosystem services were refined, and the platform business model was evaluated by means of an economic feasibility study.
In the project, the IESE experts supported Intersport in defining the strategic direction of its Digital Ecosystem for sports experiences and commercially evaluating the underlying digital platform. The results will now serve as a basis for Intersport to create the digital sports experience platform and build the entire SPEX ecosystem.
