Seminar: Systems and Software Product Line Engineering

The seminar Systems and Software Product Line Engineering is aimed at anyone who wants or needs to make systems engineering and software engineering faster, cheaper, and better. It thus addresses a major challenge in today’s world: providing and maintaining customized customer solutions with increasing complexity while at the same time keeping up with the pace of the market in terms of speed, cost, and quality.

The seminar aims to specifically exploit the potential of value-adding variants in software-intensive system families and shows how the inherent complexity can be aligned well with business goals.

The seminar teaches best practices, industry-standard methods, and tools from the areas of product line engineering, variation management, modular product building sets, and complexity management.

The seminar content is illustrated using case studies and experience reports from various application areas.

Consolidation of the learning content through group exercises.

Intensive exchange of experiences between the seminar leaders and the seminar participants.

With a combination of blended learning techniques, the seminar offers a very good learning experience and efficiency in understanding the content and applying it in the daily work context.

Your Benefit

This seminar will enable participants to

  1. better understand variant drivers and the different forms of complexity,
  2. recognize improvement opportunities that can be achieved by avoiding, managing, and reducing variants or complexity,
  3. identify and plan value-adding features / variability in product variants,
  4. design modularized product building sets or product line architectures,
  5. realize reusable building blocks, including hardware and software parts, requirements, design and test artifacts,
  6. manage changes in space and time,
  7. select and apply appropriate approaches and technologies.

You want to put strategic reuse to practical use? Attend our seminar and benefit from our expertise!

The seminar is offered by Fraunhofer IESE either in Kaiserslautern or as in-house training at your site. The contents can be adapted and focused on your specific needs. If you are interested, simply contact us without any obligation.

  • Introduction to the topic via company examples
  • Variant drivers and complexity challenges
  • Principles of strategic reuse and systems and software product line engineering according to ISO26550
  • Integrated planning of product variants, features, and building blocks in scoping
  • Feature / variability modeling
  • Reuse of requirements
  • Design of modular product line and platform architectures
  • Implementation of reusable building blocks
  • Efficient quality assurance
  • Management of reusable assets
  • Impact on processes and organizational structures
  • Use of variation management and feature modeling approaches with tools (pure::variants, Feature IDE)
  • Analyses of variants and variability in the product structure

The goal of the seminar “Systems and Software Product Line Engineering” is to train the participants in the typical activities involved in strategic reuse in complexity management. The seminar is a 3-day face-to-face training, but can also be conducted as an online seminar.

Day 1

Basics, Planning of variants

Day 2

Modeling of variability, Reuse of requirements, Platform design

Day 3

Implementation and quality assurance of reusable assets, Asset management, Impact on processes and organization

In addition to the development of methodological knowledge, much emphasis is placed on the practical application of what has been learned. Many exercises and the exchange with experts consolidate the knowledge acquired by the participants. After the seminar, the participants will be able to use the approaches they have practiced in their daily work.

The large number of projects we have conducted with industry partners shows that the lightweight approaches presented can also be integrated into existing process landscapes at companies.
